The press has definitely turned against him. Are we simply watching to see how far he goes in the NIT before he's let go?

I can't figure Martin and gang out. Let's say we do boot Amaker. Are they even gonna think about spending the money to hire someone worth a crap? Amaker's got us squeaky clean and scandal free. Our guys play like crap but at least we're not humiliating ourselves scandal-wise. Just play-wise. I couldn't even dare to venture a guess.
As far as how well we do in the NIT as far as Amaker is concerned, who cares? The only thing worse than not being in the NIT is being in the NIT. Not really but kinda. At most schools like what UM used to be like the NIT IS grounds for dismissal. Now it's hope we do but kind of hope we don't thing.

Tommy appeared to be optimistic in the press conference after the OSU game that UM had a shot at the NCAA tourny...

I would be surprised if we let Amaker go. I would love to see him gone but we would lose one if not both of the big recruits coming in and I think Alex Legion is too good to chance it. They give him another year and if he doesn't make the tourney he's out. I didn't expect much from this years team and would've bet money they didn't make the tourney this year if anyone asked a year ago.

If you give Amaker another year then you have to give him 4. The new recruiting class is no better than the group he brought in 4 years ago with Sims, Petway and Harris.

Maybe the powers that be at UM just don't care about basketball. As long as it's not causing any scandals, mediocre is ok.

And I don't see the shame of the NIT. The NCAA is talking about expanding the regular tournament to include 90+ teams.

If being #65 through #90 and going to the NIT is grounds for dismissal, will the same thing be said about a team that's ranked 89 in the expanded NCAA Tournament? I don't think so.

With hundreds of teams in the country, the majority are not going to be in the field of 64. And yet, I'll wager that there are a large number of those who, if they were let in could possibly put together a three game winning streak and get into the Sweet 16.

Heck, virtually anyone can put together a three game winning streak. Look at George Mason.

He can get all the great recruits he wants... but if they rot at Michigan with Amaker at the helm, what good does it do?

Players always enter Michigan hyped up and leave disappointments. They never get better during their four years under him! That's the sign of a bad coach.

So though we may lose the top-ranked recruits, a coach with a track record of success who can motivate and improve his team over the course of a season or two is exactly what we need.

Not one player that he has coached has ever gotten any better in their four years, even though some did have a lot of talent. Just imagine what Izzo would have done with these four seniors playing with a point guard like D.N.

That is system-dependent isn't it? However small or large the field, I'd like them to at least make the cut, so that they can play for it all and control their own destiny.

The NIT has some great teams in this year though, I'd be surprised if UM wins out. Yes, I think this team is THAT bad.

The big issue here is Martin and Coleman, and I have posted about them. Martin is a businessman and is totally sub-servient to the leftist Coleman. She (and therefore he) have no interest in winning beyond that utility it may serve to keep UM at the forefront of the liberal left wing world. There will be minority coaches for all basketball and football at UM and soon.

Minority coaches are great, and we all know talent and brilliance knows no particular creed or color. Talent and brilliance are found among any people.

BUT DAMN IT ALL, WHY CAN'T WE FIND SOME AT UM? Amaker is not it, but he will stay because why should Martin & Coleman do any more work than they have to? They have a minority coach for men's basketball, and will get one soon in football (English) and will look for one in women's basketball.

So the basic problem is of talent and brilliance, and Martin + Coleman have neither. Both came on board at a Unversity so strong just ANY decent and honest person could maintain. Both Coleman and Martin are decent and honest. But neither one will do more than maintain, and over time, will lose ground. And eventually, they will both be gone from UM as they will not be able to bring the university back up again.

But, it is going to be a long time!

I think that something a lot of people forget is the standing of the program. Tommy was brought in, in part, to keep the program clean. He has done that, graduated players, recruited decently and has lessened the amount of embarrassing losses.

All this with loss of a scholarship and one year left on probation, http://www.ncaa.org/releases/infractions/2003050802in.htm

So don't you let him see it out when you're the school leading the fight for affirmative action and losing him means losing two minority positions (his wife)? And what would that do for public image?

I'm as frustrated as the next fan, but I also realize that the person who has final say on Amaker is the same person who got all but ran out of Iowa , and tried to paint over the pink visitors locker rooms at Kinnick Stadium, Mary Sue Coleman.

Edit: btw, Amaker's presser today was pitiful.
