Will Ron English stay as the DC, or will RR bring in his own guy? I hope English stays becuase he has great intensity, and will learn the spread after practicing against it daily. He is a very aggressive coordinator/

If he has any hope of having a winning season next year he won't clean house, at least not right away, I would hope he'd keep English.

I dont see it...I think he keeps Soup, Fred Jackson and maybe Loeffler, but it is almost never a good idea to keep a guy who had his eyes on your job...and make no mistake about it, RE wanted RR's job.

I fully agree with UM Knife. I don't think RE stays because of a perceived lack of loyalty (RE wanted RR's job). I think Jackson and Loeffler will definitely stay because of recruiting ties.

RE wanted RR's job.
Then RE should have stopped App St after Michigan went up with a minute to go in the 4th quarter...

I dont think anyone is debating that...but, the fact remains if I am the new head coach I dont think I want to keep a DC who applied for my job.

I don't think RE stays even if RR wanted him to. As mentioned above, RE wanted the HC job and I'm sure was given the idea that he would be up for it when they enticed him back to be the DC. Since it didn't turn out that way I'm sure RE will be heading to the NFL for some solid experience and then back in college as the HC of a mid-major in a few years.

He only stays if there is an opening for a janitor. The defense has been a sore spot on the team for two years. Why should English get a free pass ?? He deserves as much blame as Carr.

I think keeping RE for a season would be a good thing - continuity being one element of the equation.
I think that RE's had his hands tied with Carr's defensive philosphies and had to work within what Carr had in mind - and to a degree, RE's hands may have been a bit tied.
If there's one item of potential criticism for RR, it's been the defensive performance of WVU. I'm guessing that RR will let RE show him what he can do. And, seeing the spread, or its variation, in spring practices and throughout the off season - will not only put Michigan in a better position to defend it, but also really show what RE can do.
IF RE leaves now, I doubt he'll receive an offer for a HC position - maybe, at a mid-tier conference, but I doubt you'll see him interview for a "better" I-A team, such as UCLA. However, if RE turns the Michigan D into studs next year - then, it becomes a very interesting question. Right now, do you think that Les Miles would interview RE to replace Pellini as LSU's DC? I'm not sure, and dont' think so - since RE's body of work is rather limited.
RE's a great recruiter - with proper S&C training for the D in the off season, and a chance to implement his defensive philosophy - we'll see what he's made of. And, 2008 has the potential to be a breakout, or "make or break" season for RE and the Michigan D.

Actually WV has the #4 defense in the country. I'd rather see him bring his own philosophy to AA, it appears to be working better than RE's.

Just remember that like his offensive numbers he is playing in a conference that does not play much defense. If you don't trust what I say then look at the scores of the Big East games this year. Im sure a change on both sides of the ball will be a refreahing change - but don't expect the #4 defense in the nation. RR will find out that the Big Ten is not the Big East very quickly.

Cinco,
I know how "highly rated" WV's defense was this year - but, on a whole, the level of the competition was different as well. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when RR and RE get together and talk about defensive philosophies and what each expects the defense to do.
And, if we look back at 2006 - I think most of us were very pleased with what RE did with the D - until the last two games of the season.

I'm not expecting the same results (immediately). I'm just saying it is a misconception that RR is a one-dimensional offensive mind. He is solid on both sides of the ball.

I totally disagree. Ron English did an excellent job at defending OSU. Wisconsin was a different story but there were several three and out's and we held OSU to thier lowest scoring game of the season didn't we. Our offense on the other hand was phucking pathetic. Our defensive players must have been pulling their hair out that we couldn't turn **** around.

After the blisterings by OSU 2006, USC, App St, and Oregon, I can't rationalize keeping English. I think we need a fresh start at DC.

I like him, I think the guy has passion and can do a good job but I always wondered why our defense was soooooooooo slow compared to the SEC teams. I couldn't ever get over the fact that they move like they have weights around their ankles. I agree I guess.

i read somewhere online today that english is not going to be around. actually, i think it was in reference to recruiting on rivals.com.
The expectation is that he will not be around.. and they then moved their conversation to Jackson and Mcguffie ... and whether or not he'd be around.
Cissoko seems to be down to PSU and UM. I don;t know how good he is, but since he's highly rated, bring him on in. Fast too.
Team needs speed on the line and speed in the 2ndary. Guys like Crable etc woudl have flourished under a diff coordinator.
What a waste last year's michigan defense ended up being. i wish those guys could have had another shot.
If Alan branch stayed this year, i wonder if we win a couple more games... interesting.

you're truly an idiot. our defense ROCKED last year and played 3 bad games this year. sore spot? no.
having said that i wouldn't really mind if we bring in a new DC. RE is a very good coach and i think i am one of the only people who posts on this board that would have considered him an acceptable HC, but RR needs to make his mark on the program.

I think its unlikely that he stays. It has been reported that RR wants to keep his defensive coordinator. So, thats bad news for Ron English. Regardless, if RR wants to continue to run that stupid 3 - 3 - 5 business I'd take it as another sign that English won't be retained.
