Pryor is a game breaking type runner that is perfect for that style offense. Mallett is a pocket passer and will get killed if he runs the spread / option offense. If Michigan does not get Pryor then you will see a more conventional spread offense where the QB will not run.

You are all basing this off of UM Knife's interpretation of his words. Does anyone actually have a sound bite?

I listened to the Mike Tirico show on ESPN radio yesterday and essentially, Herbstreit said the following: "If I am Ryan Mallett, the first thing I do is look to transfer. Maybe to Arkansas, where he'd be a great fit into Petrino's offense."

If this discussion goes to who would be "better" as a Michigan QB - Pryor or Mallett, I can't provide fair opinion, since I've seen nothing of Pryor's play. The key is - would Michigan run the spread offense or spread option. I think it's a two part answer - with Mallett, it's a spread offense, perhaps similar to that of New England where another "relatively slow Michigan QB" seems to be doing ok, that would be Tom Brady; if Pryor were to sign, then you'd see the spread option implemented.

And, since the spread option seems to run the risk of deteriorating significantly if a QB gets knocked out - aka Dennis Dixon and Oregon - perhaps having two very qualified QB's would be a good thing - since Pryor could adjust a bit to college life during his freshman year, and then - a potential one - two punch of Pryor / Mallett as QB.

The other key thing here is the offensive line. Regardless of what Michigan does, we need to firm up the O line to provide as much protection as possible for whoever the signal caller will be.

Mallett would be fine in a spread offense (like Brian Brohm) but not in the spread / option. He would get killed running to WV offense because he is not quick enough nor is he a game breaker. He would take a huge amount of punishment.

I don't care what style they have 1OSUNUT, you just asked for the name of "one" QB and I gave it to you. Stop backpedaling.

You might want to change your name because after the bowl game Michigan is no longer a Nike school. They will have second class uni's as well.

You never answered the question. Name me one 6'7 QB that runs the spread / option.

Well Mallet did in HS
Do some research

My name is because I used to work for Nike.
Mallet is going to shock a few people if he is the guy.

You never answered mine

Herbie is the last guy a young QB should take career advice from, given his illustrious NFL career.

Herbie is making us all look bad. He should step down before he brings OSU with him.

His actions have been very inappropriate.

There's no way that post came from Plus 1. Far to unbiased and articulate.

I too trashed Herbstreit for his poor judgement and recent inappropriate comments, but we need to look beyond all that and thank him for his true contribution to the UM-OSU rivalry...............Herbstreit never beat Michigan in his four year career at OSU. Nice.

Good point! I guess now he's trying to back door us instead! With the Les Miles report and now trying to contribute to our top QB transferring. What a punk!

This from the guy who picked Penn St. to win the Big Ten. Not the sharpest tool in the shed. Definitely a tool...just not the sharpest!!!

I can still see it...Saturday morning, ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit reported that Michigan would announce that Miles would accept their head coaching job. Herbstreit also reported that Georgia Tech defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jon Tenuta would go with him.

Plain and simple...Herb's a jacka@@!

did you ever think that could have f'd it all up for um and miles... it could have been a done deal and then miles had to go infront of his team and explain or then lsu scrambled to keep him

That's exactly what happened. There is a rumor that dip$hi+ listened to his voicemail and someone was pretending to be Desmond Howard and told him it was a done deal and to call him later with the specifics. Herbie being the journalistic wiz kid that he is never called back to confirm or didn't even bother to check his resources before getting the go ahead to announce it. Les hadn't even spoken to Martin since Martin was sitting on his thumb getting a BJ while sailing with a 250 lb African American prostitute so he couldn't answer his phone.

It all seemed to work out in the end though. Maybe we should be thanking him for being such a douchebag. I like our selection now and feel Martin redeemed himself. The trolls on here were ripping on Miles for being a $hitty coach too, although this was before they knew that they would be playing LSU for the title.

this is one of my favorite subjects, dogging herbie, HE IS PROBABLY ON BIG DADDY TRESSELS PAYROLL.herbie is a very simple insecure little turd from ohio. he got his education from osu, just about anyone that lives in ohio went to osu at some point and time. it really is not very difficult to get in or get your degree from osu,so this might explain how their boy herbie reports.this is very simple, ESPN pulls a string and herbie talks, now and then when his battery gets low these reports start comming out. as with many osu people they have a difficult time thinking for themselves , i would think by now herbies *** must be killing him ,he keeps inserting his head up their and i would have to beleive this is very painful. EVERY TIME he talks on college gameday he sounds like a typical osu alum foaming at the mouth. I WILL BET HERBIE IS 1OSUNUTS HERO. i guess thats it for now but stay tuned for more goodies and go blue

Captain Kirk at it again on ESPN today encouraging Mallet to transfer...

This is absolutely irresponsible. He cannot and should not be allowed to use his national media presence to encourage players to transfer from his alma mater's hated rival...

ESPN better wake up as they are being exposed for the national farce they have become.

Some of you are SO blinded by your OSU hatred that you can't accept the Herbie IS an unbiased reporter of college football. Hell, people in Columbus hate him because he's not enough of a homer.
Herb was making the case that it might be in Mallet's best personal interest to transfer. Would a classic drop back passer be successful in a spread option attack? Would an option qb prosper in a drop back passing offense?

C'mon. Some of you guys need to wake up. Mallet was one of the top qb recruits in the nation but that doesn't mean he's suited to play in any system.

Much of this debate is foolish.

Case and point: Shaun King. When RR was King's offensive coordinator, King threw for 3200 yards. Assuming Mallet learns to read a defense, he could do the same. Yes, Shaun King may be a little more mobile than Mallet, but he certainly isn't Pat White.

I think RR knows how to use someone like Mallet.

Shirc...no offense man, but your bias makes it impossible for you to understand. Herb really screwed up with the whole Miles thing. Not only was he wrong and irresponsible for reporting it...he could have potentially cost Michigan Les Miles. Then comes back reporting that UofM's prize stud QB should transfer? Are you kidding me??? If Herbie wasn't a buck...I'd still be pissed off! That fact that he is, just makes this whole thing stink that much more!

If you and buck nation think herb's not homer enough...you all are crazier than I thought!

Blinded?! You OSU homer fool! No broadcaster should EVER come on national television and encourage a recruit to transfer or commit. PERIOD! IT is an unethical use of one's position in the media...What makes this WORSE, is that Herbnut did it...and did it to Michigan his obvious, most hated rival. If he had a clue he would refrain from commenting on UM football. Instead he opens himself up and exposes himself for the complete and utter buttwipe that he is! F HERBNUT! F SHIRC! Go die trolls...

I've noticed a lot more angst in your posts recently, knife. Are you OK? There's a whole lotta requests for death and whatnot. Or is this firelloyd scamming knife's screen name?

I think everyone is a little quick to jump on 1 nut right now. He is making some legit comments and bringing up some valid questions. That is: A. Mallett looking over his shoulder and B. Mallett may be more mobil but nut is right, he runs pretty upright. Even shifty athletic QBs get hurt trying to make plays with their legs.

All of this is totally speculative. Nobody knows what Rodriguez is going to do, or how he's going to utilize Mallet. That's why it's so irresponsible for Herb to fill the air waves with conjecture and encourage Mallet to transfer. Total reckless reporting!

I was not slamming Mallett but he cannot run the offense that Pat White is running - he would get killed. RR would have to run a regular pass type spread if Mallett stays. Mallett is not elusive enough to run the ball and not take tons of punishment.

Everyone's missing the boat, here. There is more than one version of the spread. White ran the spread read where he takes off and runs as much or more than the RB depending on what the d line and LBs are doing. Shaun King ran the spread where they throw the fukc out of it in mostly shotgun formations. Rod has done both with much success. Mallet would do just fine in the latter version of the spread.

Toad

Again, it's all speculation. No one know what Rod's got in mind. That's why it's so irresponsible for Herb to encourage Mallet to transfer!

It's Kirk's job to report the game, not influence it!
