I hear the Wolverines have a good candidate for H-Back from the 08' class. They haven't had one in a couple of years.

What is your opinion on getting one in 08' and what affect do you think it will have on the offense since Hart will have graduated?

Well Aaron Shea was great and I love me a good H-back but they usually are seen when a team has a good RB for a one-back set. Shea was around A-train and Askew who could both sit back there and do anything that was asked of them.

With Hart they like to have a lead blocker so when he leaves, if they use a H-back, I would expect Brandon Minor to get the nod to start. He seems to fit the one-back mold.

Mike Massey would make a good H-back and if they did that I would expect a more diverse short passing game. As long as they keep using that naked bootleg play-action with the TE or WR running a crossing pattern, I love that play.

Did you mean UM picked up an H-Back in '07? We did pick up a good fullback in Vince Helmut.

We always need to pick up players at any position. You never know what can happen......injuries, position battles, anything can happen. I understand your son wants to start right away but there is never a guarantee a freshman will start at any school. The more likely a player can start right away, the worse the football program. At a top tier school you generally have several kids in front of you that can play and you have to earn a spot. Some of the lesser programs throw around playing time as a freshman quite a bit but that should be icing on the cake if it happens. The main thing is education, after that you want to be surrounded by good players and quality people that can teach you how to be a better player and eventually go pro.

Beware of the used car salesman. They get paid very well to say the right things and get you to sign on the dotted line. Be cautious of the ones that make the most promises, nothing is for sure.

So if I am understanding correctly, the H-back position is effective if the right combo is in the back field. I agree with the "used car salesman approach" but I can honestly say UM is not selling the pitch. It's the other universities trying to recruit my son who say Michigan doesn't use an h-back and not to commit there. Schools like UNC, Tennessee, Maryland, VT and Nebraska. They don't want him committing there.

I am trying to find out if that position is true to the hype that I am hearing. I have heard when the right team is back there it is very effective no matter which team is running it. True or untrue? I did watch film on Askew and Shea they looked great out there.

For it to be effective you need good players around the H-Back. There is no play or formation that can't be stopped. If setup and executed properly it can be very effective.

Being an objective fan I will tell you all those teams are full of crap. I posted this in another thread you started but I'll say it again. Teams in the NCAA change every year to their talent.

If your son is good enough he will NOT leave the field. I promise you your son will not sit the sidelines if he is good enough to be on the field.

As much as I hate OSU look at what they did last year. Two years ago people were calling the tressel offense boring, slow, ineffective. Look what they did last year.....

Looking at the talent they brought in a high impact, high scoring offense.

What I am trying to say is the days of "michigan does strictly this" or "OSU does strictly this" or "Florida does strictly this" are LONG over. Teams change every year.

I would be more weary of a team that says "we always use and h-back" because if that is not what the talent is on the team, trust me they are not gonna use an h-back.

The main point of this whole thing is that your son will not leave the field if he is good enough. That is what it comes down to. The school you mentioned are great schools that your son should be proud he is getting rectuited by. Michigan is an ELITE school though. In my opinion it is one of about 5 elite schools in the nation (taking the program, prestige, education into account). If he is in elite player his a*s will be on the field and that is essentially all it comes down to.

best of luck to you and your son

Using an H-back isn't necessarily more effective but a more diverse position than a FB or TE. A player has to have a broader skill set than those positions require in order to be considered an H-back. In Shea's case he was the 3rd TE but was still considered one of the best 12 or 13 players on offense so they found a way to use him.

Its worth mentioning that the same offensive coordinator who put Shea in that position is once again the OC at Michigan.

I will put my 2 cents in.

Coach Carr is a great man and those who meet him cannot help but be impressed by him sans media people

Any successful program that has not beaten their rivals in a while has people who get down on them. It just seems to be human nature. Take Coach Cooper at OSU...he had a nice run at OSU except for beating Michigan. If he beats them a couple more times over the years, he might still be coach there.

Those schools who need to negative recruit, have to cover up their own shortcomings somehow and that is how they do it. Others are just so used to doing it that they do not know any better.

There is a difference between telling a kid that a particular school does not have as good a depth chart than another school, but it is another just to say well so and so will not be there.

There are never any guarantees. The situation at Indiana should show everyone that there are no guarantees in the world of sports.

Ma'am, if I may, and while many of the responses in the two threads I have seen summarize the situation well, I would reiterate that Aaron Shea and BJ Askew give the lie to the notion that UM does not utilize the H-Back. Classic Michigan football demands usage of the H-Back and the TE/H-Back hybrid. Please note that our current offensive coordinator was around when these pieces were a large part of our offensive puzzle. We won the National Championship in 1997 on the back of "the waggle," a play that is run for either a tight end or an H-Back looping out of the backfield who "drags" the field to present a target for a QB on a roll out.

Michigan- if the necessity were to arise- will only hire a certain type of man as the head coach of the football program. The team will always be a family and no coach, no matter how skilled he is, will ever head this program if he intends to run a heartless factory. And you could well expect any coach to be steeped in the playcalling traditions of our Wolverines- which means that if we have the personnel, we will use the skilled H-Back and the passcatching tight end. I would genuinely like to know what school can cite two more successful NFL H-Backs than Askew and Shea and show that- like BJ and Aaron- they actually learned their craft at their university. I am a big NFL fan and I can't think of another school with even one guy who so clearly took his H-Back skills from college to the pros. We've simply lacked the personnel in the most recent seasons- much to the concern of many UM fans, I might add.

Most importantly, I can assure you that the coaches would not be so assiduously recruiting your son- and I know that he is a very high priority with them- if they intended to let his talents languish unused. This is the part of the negative recruitment pitch that unfortunately- for the negative recruiters- falls in the face of steady logic. If they did not foresee a vital role in their future offensive plans, why would they want him so badly?

I wish you and your son the best of luck in the challenging and yet hopefully rewarding task of choosing his future college. I hope that we are lucky enough to cheer him on each weekend of that future.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I think I am going to let my son read your responses to ease his mind.

He is used to being on the field for every down and it was a concern of his how often he would be on the field. I told the position is only as good as the player makes it. Work hard and make it happen.

OK, Gordify--what is your opinion? By the way, boy did I get slammed for using this site to ask som questions about h-back. No fear though, I think there is never a dumb question and you can never have to much information. It's up to me to consider all sources.

Again, I think I have been given some great advice. I saw some clips on McGuffie, he is incredibly quick. What do you think if you had a choice him versus Jonas Gray?

Jonas Gray has pretty much eliminated UM. It really looks like he is going to end up at MSU.

McGuffie is our main target at that position. UM showed this by offering Gray late. Michigan HS junior running backs are looking real good and this is probably why there was not more of a push for Gray.

yeh i think he will be commiting to msu which doesnt hurt, because we got mcguffie right now looking good. I do like jonas gray..3 inches smaller than Sam, he is also able to find holes and create some magic.I will go for mcguffie because he is WHITE!. . that right there is something SPECIAL

I happened to run across it yesterday. I let my son read it. He liked your breakdown of various options with everyone in play. Who would you rather see in the backfield Gray or McGuffie?

McGuffie... He adds an extra dimension. Gray reminds me a bit of Grady.
