Cronin is Beilein Recruit #1

GoBlueWolverine has learned that Syracuse (NY) Henninger big man Ben Cronin has pledged to play his college ball at the University of Michigan. Cronin chose the Wolverines over Syracuse and Buffalo.

Ben Cronin averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks per game during his junior season at Henninger High. The 7-0, 235-pounder's perimeter shooting ability first drew John Beilein's attention when he was headman at West Virginia. Beilein then continued to recruit the youngster when he took over the basketball program at Michigan. The upstate New Yorker visited Ann Arbor last week, and his positive experience on that to-day trip proved to be one of the most significant factors in his decision to become a Wolverine.

"I am very happy about where I will be attending college," Cronin told GoBlueWolverine last night. "Everyone in my family is very happy... my dad, mom, grandparents and uncle. My high school coach supports wherever I go, so I am glad about that."

"It is a relief that it is over but at the same time I am excited about it," Cronin said. "I feel that I can now focus on school now."

Cronin is the first commitment in the John Beilein era and leaves the Wolverines with two more scholarships to give for the 2008 recruiting class (assuming no late 2007 targets are added).

Stay tuned to GoBlueWolverine throughout the day for more from Cronin on his choice.

Scout.com ranks him as an "Outstanding Prospect:
Player has the ability to create mismatches against most opponents. He is a player that could be a contributor as a true freshman."

Looks like this kid has a lot of raw talent. Sounds like a good start to 2008

Oh I checked, bigboyblue. I'll be damned if some putz is gonna come on here and post "premium" content on my watch. TheWolverine is probably going to go under now because of the knife. This article can be found on their front page for all to see and read. Apparently it's not "premium" enough for members only.
Sidenote: Don't you have to be member at Rivals or Scout to get all the "good" stuff on recruits and whatnot? Nobody ever has a problem with posting that drivel.

How can a 7 footer only average 12 points a game in high school? Just stand him under the hoop and pass the ball to him.

I think it depends a lot on who else was on his team. Keep in mind it was also his junior season. He's an early commit and I'm sure his numbers will improve drastically. Still, almost averaging a triple double isn't exactly anything to seeze at.

He's more of a european style big. He has a nice stroke and tends to hang around his mid range game. I understand what you mean (i.e. standing under the basket in HS) but I'd rather work with a guy in the post then try to get him comfortable stepping him outside 15 feet. The inside game is MUCH easier to teach a 7'0''. The mid range game is more of something you just have. It's very hard to teach, especially to a 7'0''. IMO He seems like a guy that will really fit in Belein's system (i.e. Pittsnoggle).

Also, A 7'0'' doesn't need to be a scorer to be effective. 12 rebounds and 8 blocks a game is much more important at this point. Scoring will come as he grows in to his frame. JMHO.
