Rodriguez fires Michigan assistant coaches
Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News
ANN ARBOR -- Incoming Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez has fired all nine current assistant coaches.

There is a possibility defensive line coach Steve Stripling may be rehired.

Rodriguez, who was on campus Wednesday and Thursday to meet with football operations personnel and observe bowl practices, sat down with the coaches one by one on Thursday and to give each the news.

"He told us all, and we respect him for that," said Erik Campbell, who played football for Michigan and has been receivers coach under Lloyd Carr. "It's part of the profession. It's good for us because now we have closure.

"We knew the possibility that he would not rehire us was there. You never know until you here the words, and today was the day."

The staff will remain intact under Carr through the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1. Carr announced his retirement Nov. 19 after 13 seasons as head coach.

"I understand that's the profession, and he has to be loyal to his guys," defensive coordinator Ron English said. "I'm not angry. The opportunity has been awesome. I've grown here."

Several coaches indicated earlier this week a strong sense that Rodriguez, the 44-year-old coach who comes here from West Virginia, would "clean house" in terms of the coaching staff.

Last summer, Carr worked out a contract with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin that would give his assistants an additional year of salary after this season.

"You expect it when there's change like this -- this is not a shocker," Campbell said. "For me, it's a disappointment, because I grew up here. I went to school here. It's just disappointing."

Campbell said all of the coaches have been through this before and will recover.

"We're coaches, and we're all great coaches, and we've all been at different programs," Campbell said. "Of course we're all disappointed, because we would all like to be here.

"But it's all over. It's a new beginning."

Rodriguez has not yet shaped up his Michigan staff yet. He did bring with him Monday for his formal announcement offensive coordinator Calvin Magee and defensive backs coach/recruiting coordinator Tony Gibson.

The Carr is now 100% over.

Finally! What does this do, however, to the prospects of bringing in Sam McGuffy -- wasn't he really interested in working with the RB coach? Or have I missed that he's already sign, either with us or somewhere else?

Wait a minute... This just in!!

Detroit Free Press
Angelique S. Chanlis

Accoriding to new coach Rich Rodriguez he will retain Lloyd Carr as both offensive and defensive coordinator. Rodriguez had the following comment "When a legend is around you do everything to keep that legend forever. Do you think the Norweigans would of asked Beowulf to leave after he defeated Grendel? Well I'm not going to do that to Lloyd after the way he wupped Eastern Michigan this year"
Lloyd said "It will be nice to be the head coach in essence but be able to pass off the criticism onto Rich. I cherish this opportunity fit for a legend."

Being at the heart of the matter I can confirm this story is accurate!!

Wouldn't you think it would be smart to keep one or two on to help best evaluate the player's strengths and weaknesses, how to talk to each individual player, understand what motivates them etc? I know he's going to hire capable people, but they will be go into next year without even a season with the players.

I agree, to an extent -- but, I think RR wants to purge the stink from the well and start fresh. Carr's legacy of mediocrity needed to be removed, and keeping some of the old guard around is not the smartest thing -- he needs 100% loyalty from his staff.

You know, UM never had a Top 25 caliber coaching staff. I have reservations, but I also welcome the chance to clean house and get some high caliber coaching.

So, anyone think Tenuta might be coming in now .

I think Coach Rod took Dierdorf's words to heart when he said Michigan was a top 10 team without a top 25 coaching staff lol

Tenuta would be great! I get see alot of GT games and their defense is always attacking. Give him first class athletes and he'd get amazing results....That being said, word on the street is that he's going to LSU to replace Pellini

This blows I got to meet the michigan coaching staff and would've really liked to see some of the guys stick around. I really wanted to see Coach Campbell, English, and Jackson stay and I really liked all their personalities. I got to know coach campbell pretty well @ the michigan camp and I hope all of them the best and will continue to root for them wherever they coach next.

The only one that I'm upset about is Fred Jackson. That guy could recruit with the best of them. As far as Loeffler? What's he going to coach Pryor to do? How to be 6'6'' and throw like a shot putter and hit the linemen in the back of the helmet? Or, over throw the open guy 20 yards down field?
I'm glad he's finally gone.

This reminds me of one time at spring break that I ate to much before going out. Sometimes it's just better to go a head and PURGE! PURGE! Get rid of all the sh!t and start over.

When all the words were being exchanged through the media after the Miles debacle. It was in the Free Press, Det news and MLive.

Pryor obviously liked Rodriguez more so since he was the first person to even know RR took the Michigan job. Besides, why would Pryor like Loeffler? Pryor was never really even looking at Michigan, it was mainly Ohio State and WVU.

I would guess Jackson and Leoffler will both be re-hired. The remaining 7, most likely not.

Article also says that Carr was boxing up his stuff and moving out of his office by EOD. Wow, things sure happen fast don't they? It's barely been a week since they met in Toledo!!!

Some of them will be rehired, jackson is already rehired, he will interview the rest and find out who he wants to keep, Likely Loefler, Stripling, Campbell. English would not likely stay because he was a rival to Rodriguez in the search.
